A Protected geographical indication (PGI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a PGI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. In other words, to receive the PGI status, the entire product must be traditionally and at least partially manufactured (prepared, processed or produced) within the specific region and thus acquire unique properties. PGI Agora was established in 1996.
The history of wines that are part of the PGI Agora and have made this region famous throughout Greece stems from a man’s passion for wine, history and art.In the late 1970s, Nikos Lazaridis, a successful marble entrepreneur, started his journey into the enchanting world of wine.Being determined to turn his love of wine into profession,he began to plant vineyards in different locations of his homeland, the prefecture of Drama in the region of Eastern Macedonia.
In 1987 the first viticultural and wine-making company was founded in Drama with the participation of Nikos Lazaridis. After thorough experimentation, in different terroir of Drama, the area of Agora was chosen, where the new vineyards, which covered the majority of the company’s own vineyards, were planted. Nico Lazaridis then built the winery, Château Nico Lazaridi, which was meant to change the wine tradition, not only in the borders of Drama but around the whole country.
The area of Agora includes the boundaries of the local communities of Agora and Pigadia Megas Alexandros,of the Municipality of Doxato,in the regional section of Drama.Undoubtedly, this is a place with rich history and great cultural heritage.
Agora is located in a 15 minute distance from the ancient city of Philippi, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes one of the best preserved ancient theaters in the world. During the ancient Roman era, Philippi was one of the most important cities of the known world, crossed by the Egnatia Road (Via Egnatia). On the plain to the west of the city, during October in 42 BC the famous Battle of Philippi took place. The victor, Octavian Augustus defeated Brutus and Cassius, the murderers of Julius Caesar, and became the first emperor in Rome, ending democracy. Nearby is the river Zygaktis, which the ancient Greeks believed to be the river crossed by Pluto’s chariot as it passed to the Underworld carrying his great loot, Persephone. Apostle Paul established the first church in Europe in Philippi and the inhabitants of Philippi are the first inhabitants of Europe to hear the Christian preaching, while the adjacent settlement of Lydia was named after Lydia of the Philippines, the first European to be baptized Christian.
CHÂTEAU NICO LAZARIDI
In this blessed land, Nico Lazaridi Winery proudly dominates from the top of a hill, in complete harmony with the diverse natural landscape, having at the same time direct control of the vineyards. The vines used in the production of the PGI Agora wines are located at an altitude of 175m – 250m and they cover a total area of 54 hectares.
Nikos Lazaridis however, did not establish his winery in Agora only because of the exceptional location but also due to the unique soil morphology. During the interglacial period, the smooth flow of rivers and streams that are present in the area led to the erosion of deposition materials and the creation of terraces over time, resulting in the enrichment of the subsoil with nutrients, which ensure the health of the vineyard. The consequence of these long-lasting natural processes is the creation of calcareous and shale soil ideal for a quality viticulture. At the same time, the Mediterranean and Continental climate offers the ideal temperature conditions for the proper physiology, cultivation and maturation of the grape, while the mountains surrounding the area provide protection against intense rainfalls and winds that could be devastating to crops.
Nico Lazaridi’s family has always aimed at creating experienced executives, being a model for new scientists and other similar businesses. This is also confirmed by the fact that people who have been working for Nico Lazaridi are now operating as entrepreneurs or as executives in similar businesses. In this way the company is recognized as a school for the creation of integrated executives in the field of wine.In Nico Lazaridi, man cultivates the vine with the help of mechanical equipment, always on the basis of respect for the raw material and the environment, applying Precision Agriculture. The long-standing experience of our team of viticulturists and specialized oenologists, in cooperation with the rest our staff, safeguard the high levels of quality at all stages of production and contribute to the success of Nico Lazaridi wines.
